Practice for retention and transfer.

Build a skill you can use after the session ends. Check it later, then test it in the setting where it needs to work.

Distinguish performance from learning

A movement may improve during a session because the person warmed up, received continuous feedback, or learned how to satisfy the immediate instruction. Those changes can be useful. They do not by themselves demonstrate a durable skill.

Motor-learning research distinguishes acquisition during practice from retention after a delay and transfer to another context.[1] For rehabilitation, that distinction asks whether an improved chair rise remains available tomorrow and whether it helps with another chair at home.

Choose the task you want to carry over

Break a difficult task down when that makes practice manageable, but return to the whole activity. A supported hinge can help introduce a movement. Lifting a shopping bag also requires grip, load choice, object position, and decisions about the environment. The isolated drill covers only part of that task.

Define what success means: reach a shelf, rise with less hand support, change direction while walking, or carry an object to another room. A visually tidy repetition is not automatically the outcome the person values.

Vary one relevant condition

Keep the variation appropriate to current capacity. A change in chair height, object location, or sequence can be enough. Unsafe balance disturbances or unnecessary distractions do not make a session more scientific.

Understand blocked and interleaved practice

Blocked practice repeats one version before moving to the next: AAA, BBB, CCC. Interleaved practice switches among versions: ABC, BCA, CAB. Switching can make practice feel less smooth because the person must repeatedly retrieve or adapt the solution.

A systematic review found a pooled transfer advantage for higher contextual interference, but the studies were heterogeneous and applied-setting results were less certain than laboratory findings.[2] The finding supports asking when variation helps; it does not require random practice for every learner or clinical problem.

Difficulty is a design choice

A task should challenge the ability you intend to train while leaving a way to succeed safely. If every attempt fails, simplify the range, support, speed, instructions, or number of choices. If every repetition needs the same detailed cue, test whether a shorter cue or a brief period without feedback improves independence.

Check whether the cue travels

Use a cue that directs attention toward the relevant action. For some people, an instruction about moving an object is clearer than several body-part instructions. For others, a specific positional cue helps introduce the task. Keep the cue that improves understanding and performance, and assess whether it remains necessary.

Ask the learner to describe the task in their own words. Then observe a later attempt with less prompting. This gives more information about independence than repeating a coached performance at the end of the same session.

Keep a practice record

Write down the task, support, cue, immediate result, and later result separately. Add one relevant transfer situation. When the skill disappears later, examine the task demands and feedback conditions before concluding that the person is weak, unmotivated, or “moving wrong.”
